Publish complete posts on the homepage
Hakone presents the full content of each post on the homepage instead of reducing your writing to titles, excerpts, and thumbnails. Readers can move from one essay, journal entry, or photo story to the next without opening a separate page.
The Load More button brings in another group of posts when readers reach the end of the current page.

Give each post its own treatment
Hakone includes styling tags that change an individual post without changing the whole publication. Use a post’s feature image as the background, then select light text for contrast.

For short notes, images, and informal updates, Hakone also supports untitled posts. The post URL replaces the missing title on the archive page, so the entry remains reachable.

You can also give a post a light or dark background and choose a contrasting text color. These options help different kinds of entries feel distinct while keeping the same underlying layout.

Let readers inspect every image
Enable Hakone’s image lightbox to open post images in a larger overlay. Readers can move through every image in the post as one numbered sequence, which works well for photo essays, artwork, and visual research.

Tune the reading experience
Ghost Admin settings control the site’s background and text colors, heading and body fonts, search, sticky navigation, paragraph indentation, and paragraph justification. Hakone also includes a right-to-left layout option for publications that need it.

Memberships without a separate visual system
Hakone uses Ghost memberships for subscriptions and restricted posts. Readers can sign in, create an account, or subscribe from the navigation, while members-only posts show the appropriate access prompt.
Native Ghost comments are available on individual post pages when discussion is enabled.
Is Hakone right for your publication?
Choose Hakone when the homepage itself should be the reading experience: complete essays, notes, or photo stories presented in sequence. It is less suited to a magazine that needs a dense homepage with many topic sections and compact story cards.

Hakone is a city in Japan that I was lucky enough to visit, with beautiful nature and relaxing hot springs.
